Thrissur Pooram 2023 - Kerala Festival 

Thrissur Pooram is also known as the festival of festivals, In this year 2023 Thrissur Pooram will be held from May 10 to May 11 in Thrissur Vadakkunnathan kshethram (temple). The Vadakkunnathan Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva in the city of Thrissur, Kerala, India. The temple is a typical example of Kerala architecture and has monumental pagodas on all sides besides Kutambalam. Thrissur Pooram is a grand celebration of the cultural and spiritual essence of Kerala. The festival takes place during the months of April to May at the Thekkinadu ground near the Vaddakumnathan temple in Thrissur town. The celebration includes a spectacular procession of decorated elephants and attractive drumming performances over 36 hours from 6am to noon the next day. Unlike other Pooram festivals in Kerala, in Thrissur Pooram, millions of people come to this beautiful festival.

Tichur Pooram has a history going back 200 years. It was started by Shakthan Thampuran, Maharaja of Kochi at the end of ages and it involves 10 different temples for this Thrissur Pooram,

These temples participate with their highly capitalized elephants and traditional orchestral music. This sequence is called the Pooram.

The feast begins with the arrival of the poor from the ten temples. A spectacular spectacle of elephants and percussion instruments captivates all the poor. One of the highlights of the festival is the rapid and rhythmic changing of colorful umbrellas in a ceremony known as the Kudamattom ceremony.

Another big festival ceremony is a local performance called Ilanjithara Melam where hundreds of performers play an orchestra with traditional musical instruments. The spirit of the ceremony is reflected again with thousands of spectators shouting and swaying to the rhythm of the music and creating a truly magical moment. The Thrissur Pooram festival ends with a big fireworks display.

The Pooram festival is celebrated by two rival groups representing the two divisions of Thrissur Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi, challenging each other and promising to overshadow each other with more spectacular fireworks. Each group may exhibit a maximum of fifteen elephants. Nothing is left to chance for the parties to get their hands on the best South Indian elephants and the most artistic umbrellas to decorate the elephants. The celebrations begin early in the morning and last until dawn the next day.
















The procession of Thiruvambadi Pooram in the grounds of Vadakkumnatha Temple and back is not only a must-see but also very vivid with the miraculous and magical effect of Panchavadyam, a combination of five percussion and wind instruments, to feel and feel to enjoy. Thrissur Pooram Main Attractions

Pooram is a grand spectacle with nightly fireworks, colorful "Kudamattom" (exchanging different types of umbrellas), the famous "Elanjithara Melam" and a majestic procession of elephants. The best elephants from the many temples of Kerala are sent to Trichur to participate in the great eight-day Puram festival.

 The final day celebrations begin in the morning with a procession of 15 elephants marching from Thiruvambadi Temple to the nearby Vadukunnathan Temple. The main elephant in the group carries the idol of Lord Krishna. At the same time, another group of 15 elephants set off from the Paramekavu Bhagavathy temple. The leader of this group will carry an idol of the Goddess. This group of 30 decorated elephants face each other in two rows at the festival site, Tekkinkadu maidan, as drums and Nadaswarams (instruments like flutes) create a musical crescendo.

"Melam" includes about 80 drummers and many other artists who are experts in playing various instruments. Around 2:00 p.m., a crescendo of music starts in the area under the Elanchi tree called "Elanchithara Melam" and lasts for 3 hours. Artists perform in a spirit of competition. The atmosphere is filled with music and the elephants seem to enjoy the music, wiggling their ears to the sound of drums. In the evening, an umbrella contest called ‘Kudamattom’ begins after people carrying brightly colored umbrellas and ‘Venchamaramas’ perch on elephants.

 They will keep the umbrellas and fans changing aesthetically in perfect rhythm with the music. This event arouses great enthusiasm among thousands of spectators. After this event, the elephant returned and the statue of Krishna and the goddess returned to the temple. At night, the floor is illuminated by lamps. The next day, around 3 am, a colorful fireworks display will start for nearly 3 hours. The fireworks display is a competition between two teams representing the two divisions of Trichur, Paramekkavu and Tiruvuvampadi, competing to make each other's show bigger than the other and The festival ends in the afternoon. Also Trichur pooram is almost the last pooram in the season, which means pooram has its season which start from February to May. Almost every pooram will happen in between these months, the same type of festival will happen in the name of ‘Thalappoli’, ‘ Vela’ , ‘Ulsavam’ and so on.

Kudamattam: Representatives of the temples participate in this event. Colorful and handmade umbrellas are exchanged, sitting atop the elephants. More than 50 elephants are used in this festival and they are decorated with decorative golden headdresses, decorative bells, ornaments and umbrellas. The entire procession is a spectacular event of the festival.
Fireworks show (Vedikkettu) Held early in the morning after the festival, around 3:00 local time. Both the temples have put out many innovative and attractive fireworks with their competitive nature. It's a pleasure to see these comments. In this particular period of Thrissur pooram many foreigners come from different countries.
