Kuthampully is the land located near to Palakkad and Thrissur border, is situated in between the rivers called gayathripuzha and bharathapuzha, many people has had heard about the name thiruvilwamala because thiruvilwamala is famous for the temple called vilwadrinadan temple. kuthampully is just 5 km away from thiruvilwamala. In the Recent 5 - 10 years kuthampully handloom sarees has high demand in the market. as we know clothing is the everlasting business field in the world. As long as human lives in this world clothes will have a high demand among humans. especially ladies, kids, and students who are the majority coming to kuthampully to buy dresses. while compared to other days festive days like Onam, Vishu, Christmas, etc.. business rate is very high and this is the reason why people have chosen this handloom business as their priority. previously people used to market clothes like, set saree, kasavu mundu, set mundu, dothies, etc.. by direct walk only. but now in 2023, the marketing strategy has developed so they doing online marketing and through social media marketing they earn so much money.
As you know that kuthampully is very well famous for handloom dresses, But
nowadays if you visit kuthampully village you can see that on every corner there is a shop for clothes, but just because of handloom clothes only. But the hidden secret behind this is, I don't know how many people are aware of it but , the wages for handloom workers are getting very less. if the workers getting monthly about 8000 rupees and after these dresses come to market then sellers getting nearly 40000-50000 rupees. that is 8k converted into 40k. here there is no value for workers, and people stopped working in handloom now, but because of the high demand for handloom dresses and less product availability, the sellers started selling power-loom sarees. but they selling this product in the name of handloom only. many people don't know the difference between a handloom and a power loom and this advantage is what most sellers are using. previously in kuthampully had lots of workers for handloom but because of wages issue almost 70 % of the stopped their work and changed to other fields. now this area is mostly handled by new generation people and if you ask about a particular thing or something about handloom cloth they would say something else. But i won't say 100 % of handloom dresses are stopped making here. still in some of the shope in kuthampully you can get handloom dresses.
All the fabrics used to create the clothes we sell in the Chapel collection are hand-loomed. It is a loom operated manually by a skilled person and not by machines. The result is a completely unique and meticulously detailed garment that produces garments of the highest quality from jobs that take pride in their creations. However, this ancient craft is increasingly being replaced as many fabric manufacturers choose to use cheaper power looms instead of hand looms. Every inch of cloth made on a power loom is its exact replica, the workers operating the machines require no skill, and each worker is a cog in the machine with no opportunity to take pride in his work.
Unfortunately, making cloth on a handloom is a dying skill that is quickly being replaced by power looms because they produce fabric faster and cheaper. However, communities in remote areas still refuse to give up their tradition and continue to use handlooms. It is these skilled artisans and women who our designers work hard to create the dresses we sell in the Chappell Collection and we take great pride in them.
Below we have listed ways you can tell the difference between handwoven and power loom fabrics.
1. Handloom has a naturally rough, uneven surface that gives it an ethnic appeal. Knots, threads, close edges are common features of handmade fabrics. Even when woven from the same yarns, Powerloom fabric has a consistent texture and is seamless without the handloom sheen.
3. Handwoven fabric is generally softer in texture and more durable, whereas power loom fabric is stiffer and coarser due to the tight weave and distribution of fabrics that occur in the power loom. To check for softness and texture, the fabric should be draped and hand examined.
4. Handwoven fabrics usually have extra threads at the end of the pallu, which can be used to make tassels.
5. The back is the counterpart in the handloom but in the loom lots of loose or floating threads hang on the back because you cannot weave them while the loom weaves. So to check, turn the fabric inside out and check the wrong side.
And hand looms have a definite advantage over power. And knowing this is useful because it sheds light on their design capabilities, durability, and strength. So here are some facts…
1. Artisans try to weave even the smallest details. The level of complexity and sharpness of design cannot be matched on a loom. Authentic handlooms are decorated with intricate traditional Persian patterns such as amaru, ambi and domain. Machine looms generally do not use these traditional patterns or have the level of detail that hand looms do. Some weaving techniques are only possible on handlooms. For example, Banarasikadwa weaving cannot be recreated on a power loom.
2. The power loom produces a unique tension which makes the fabric thinner and therefore a hand-woven fabric made from the same raw material is heavier and has more fullness. When you hold the cloth in your hand, you feel the energy of the body.
3. Because of the loose weave of the handlooms, which strengthens them as mentioned, they breathe and let air in, but the handlooms are stuck.
4. Due to the uneven weave of handloom fabrics, they recover better from creases or wrinkles from looms.
5. Due to the thinness of the fabric woven on the loom caused by the frictional speed, the weak fibers break and sometimes a group of small or broken fibers form tangles and pills on the surface of the fabric. . This reduces the strength of the fabric, but handwoven garments do not. With a hand knot the knots are soft and close to the edge, but with a loom they can appear all over the place and stick.
